PFP August meeting is cancelled

News in PFP land is that the August meeting, and the Peace Day plans, have been cancelled. It was decided to put more energy into planning a spectacular Peace Day event next year, coordinated with the visiting sister city folks from Japan, with the scholarship distributions, and more.

September's meeting goes on as planned at 7 p.m. on the 2nd Thursday of the month, at the Chez.
That's September 10th.

PFP will be tabling at the Arts Fair on the Square in Waupaca, on August 15th, selling t-shirts, fair trade olive oil and pancake mix. Volunteers are needed to work the table. Please contact Jane Haasch if you can help. (Call the Chez at 256-2672 if you need help finding Jane).

Upcoming events:

November 21: Peace vigil. City square of Waupaca. 5 pm.
All are welcome. Vigils are held every third Friday of the month in order to coincide with the nationwide Iraq moratorium project.

December 13th: Children's music recital. 2 pm until 4:30 (or so?) At the Chez (108 S. Main Street, Waupaca. 256.2672). All are welcome. Suggested donation is $5. All proceeds this year will be donated to the local food pantry and Bread Basket meals program.

These books are all available at our local libraries and through inter-library loans. Just ask your friendly librarian for help.

January Waupaca People for Peace gathering

The time allotted for the January People for Peace meeting is being filled with a guest speaker from Action Wisconsin. The event will take place January 19th, at the Holly Center on S. Main in Waupaca. Following is the official press release:

ACTION WISCONSIN SPEAKER

What are the implications for families of the proposed state constitutional amendment that would limit marriage to one man and one woman?

A representative of Action Wisconsin will share information about the amendment on January 19 at 7:00 pm at the Holly Center on Main Street in Waupaca. Waupaca People for Peace is sponsoring the event.

The proposed amendment is expected to pass the Assembly and would then be placed as a referendum on the November ballot.

Although Wisconsin currently does not recognize gay partnerships, many companies extend benefits to gay couples and their families. The amendment may change the reception of these benefits for partners and their families. Legal protection for these couples and their families would also be in question.

Public information about the proposal and discussion of its implications in real people's lives will lead to an informed voting population.

Everyone is most welcome and encouraged to attend.

URGENT!! Please take a moment to take action to assist four peacemakers currently held captive in Iraq. Their situation is admittedly bleak, but perhaps a large enough public outcry can still save them.
Visit this site to sign a petition demanding their release. And visit Christian Peacemaker Teams website for more information about the organization and the hostages. CPT is not there to proselytize; their stated goal is to "get in the way" of injustice. They've been there trying to protect Iraqi citizens from the effects of war, intervening in conflict situations when they reasonably can. Here is some information from their website...

"Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) arose from a call in 1984 for Christians to devote the same discipline and self-sacrifice to nonviolent peacemaking that armies devote to war. Enlisting the whole church in an organized, nonviolent alternative to war, today CPT places violence-reduction teams in crisis situations and militarized areas around the world at the invitation of local peace and human rights workers. CPT embraces the vision of unarmed intervention waged by committed peacemakers ready to risk injury and death in bold attempts to transform lethal conflict through the nonviolent power of God’s truth and love.

"Initiated by Mennonites, Brethren and Quakers with broad ecumenical participation, CPT’s ministry of Biblically-based and spiritually-centered peacemaking emphasizes creative public witness, nonviolent direct action and protection of human rights.

Dan Naylor to speak at next PFP meeting

People for Peace will be hosting Dan Naylor on Thursday, November 17, at 7 PM, at the Holly Historical Society at 321 S Main St, Waupaca

Dan is the father of two children who have served in the armed forces in Iraq.

Dan and his wife Mary recently convinced their township to pass a resolution calling for a timeline on the removal of troops from Iraq.

Dan is also a candidate for the 40th district state assembly seat, currently held by Jean Hundertmark, who is vacating the seat in order to run for Lt. Governor.

All are welcome and there is no charge for the event.

Upcoming Art Show: The History of Art in the Peace Movement

In January, Waupaca People for Peace and the Waupaca Community Arts Board will co-sponsor a traveling display of posters depicting the history of Art in the peace movement. This traveling display comes to us from the city of Bradford, England, which is known as “the city of Peace.” It will be displayed in the gallery space of the Chez Marché Cafe, downtown Waupaca. A brief overview of the group's origins and continuing efforts

People for Peace is a citizen's group formed in 1986 around the idea that world peace begins with each of us. In those days of the waning cold war between the US and the Soviet block, ordinary people, including those in Waupaca, hungered for peace and ways to make connections within their own communities and across the globe.

People for Peace started with a small lantern float on Shadow Lake, inspired by Japanese tradition, on or near the date of the August 6 anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing in Japan. It honored those who lost their lives in war and reminded the living of the need for peaceful ways to solve conflict. Activities of the group have included high school peace studies groups, Earth Day activities, book studies, peace vigils, speakers, debates and concerts. Each year the group gives a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior.
